Marangu Route

If you decide to embark on a once-in-a-lifetime journey up Kilimanjaro through the legendary Marangu Route, it is good to know the following. Known affectionately as the ‘Coca-Cola’ route, this historic path to Uhuru Peak offers a unique perspective on this iconic mountain. Usually it is done over the course of 5-6 days, but our recommendation is that you do it in 7 days. We believe that it is better to take your time and minimize the risk of altitude sickness, which can be greater when rushing up the mountain. Taking the time to acclimatize properly allows your body to adjust to the higher altitudes, making for a safer and more enjoyable journey to the summit of 19,341 feet. While the route is considered less technically demanding, proper acclimatization is still essential.

What distinguishes the Marangu Route is the availability of comfortable, rustic huts along the way, providing a cozy respite each night.

These huts are equipped with bunk beds and communal dining areas, ensuring a comfortable rest amidst the awe-inspiring surroundings. The route is aptly nicknamed the ‘Coca-Cola’ route due to the availability of bottled beverages at the huts along the way. This amenity offers a touch of comfort and familiarity amidst the rugged mountain terrain.

The crowning achievement of your journey is the summit push, which commences in the early morning hours. This demanding ascent leads you to Gilman’s Point, situated on the crater rim, before a relatively flat traverse takes you to the highest point, Uhuru Peak. It’s an exhilarating moment of triumph and an experience you’ll treasure forever! As you begin your descent, savor the sweeping vistas that surround you, showcasing the diverse ecosystems of Kilimanjaro. The descent typically spans two days, culminating in a well-deserved overnight stop at a lower altitude for optimal recovery. This route provides an optimal balance of challenge and comfort, making it a favored choice for many. The availability of amenities and the opportunity to bond with fellow climbers add to its appeal.

However, it’s important to note that while many favor Marangu for its gradual slope and direct path, the short time frame of the route can make altitude acclimatization fairly difficult.

Additionally, the route is considered less scenic than others because the ascent and descent follow the same path, and it tends to be the most crowded route for this reason.

For a safe and successful climb, we highly recommend enlisting the expertise of experienced outfitters and guides.
